The Canucks sure made a bold choice this week, by choosing Quinn "Huggybear" Hughes as the 15th Captain of the Vancouver Canucks.
I am not sure if these three were there for support or to plot against him.
Demko - Still trying to figure out if he can switch over defenseman and make more money.
Petey - Thinking about moving to another city now that Quinn is captain
J.T. - Thinking about the shitshow of last year and alternate routes around the Lions Gate.
I call this move a "bold" one due to the fact that Petey is the piece that controls Vancouver's destiny for the next 5-7 years. Petey has been able to handle the intense scrutiny of Vancouver press and Swedish as well. Petey is respected by other players in the league and by referees.
I wonder how Hughes became the "choice" for management. Contractural security? Maybe the fact he is American and not Canadian or Swedish, was enough of a change for this management group. Maybe he has dirt on Allvin.
I will say that Hughes could easily end any current arguments about who is the best Canuck defenseman ever, if he able to score 70+ points and lead the Canucks into the playoffs this year.
Of course, there is also the fact that if Petey leaves, it will be mentioned that he was not named Captain and that precipitated his departure.
I guess we will just have to see how this season turns out.
For the record: I would have named Myers captain and then traded him
