GAME #48 RECAP - Nucks Win A Period, Score 3 And Still Lose!

January 19, 2026
- jimmi

Great Tanking News! Canucks Beat Historic Consecutive Loss Record With Their 11th!

Bad news... Nucks got close to getting our hopes up they might win a game in January.

Here's what we learned:

With the Sherwood trade news we knew was coming, it was still a tough vibe to handle. How many games did we lose without Kiefer? Too many. How many did we win after trading What's-His-Name? Quite a few.

This was a game that Sherwood would have made the difference - as the Nucks highest scoring forward.

Yet, Canucks came out in the 1st and played better than expected.

#Canucks playing like they don’t want to be traded next 😉

Period 1

This might sound like hockey science fiction, but the Canucks get the FIRST GOAL of the GAME!

First goal of the game in the ROG in the entire month!

Great work from Hogz and Karlsson gets the puck to Max Sassy in the slot who a Sassoninates a shot past Shorworken.

1-0 Nucks not even 3 minutes into the game.

WOO! Sasson, from Karlsson and Höglander!

Höggy's first point! FINALLY!

That it was the fault of DeAngelo just makes it all the sweeter.

-- Thursday

The joy, the false hope lasted for not quite 10 minutes.

Then, as per usual, Nucks get a tad hemmed in their own zone. Petey Jr doesn't cover his man quite well enough and Lanky doesn't cover his net quite well enough.

Oof, Lanks was slow getting across, looked like. #Canucks.

Well it felt good for 5 minutes or so #canucks nation - game tied at 1

— CZ 🇨🇦 💙 🇺🇦 (@choiceznewz.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 7:30 PM

Pretty sure Lanky wanted that one back. Not just because it ended his shutout bid, but because it meant Nucks have given up a lead. And we don't get many of those - if any - this month.

And then, in a Monday miracle of trade value, Kane scores on a tip from MPetey point shot. Assist to Kampf.

Canucks have regained the lead! Leading 2-1 after 1.

Is this where Kane gets hot, goes on a run and scores 40 goals this season? No. But he’s scored again. #Canucks

#Canucks WINNING! A period! A first! Woooooo!!!

— NucksMisconduct (@nucksmisconduct.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 7:47 PM

There was a little scare as it appeared the Isles #1 2025 pick, 18 year old Sam Bennett Matthew Schaefer knocked the puck past Lanky while unattended in the paint. However, the play was deemed offside and nothing further scared us. During the intermission.

Is ONLY the 3rd or 4th 'Rebuild' in the last decade!? ENJOY winning this period #canucks nation! 💙💚💙

Period 2

First the bad news... Nucks didn't score any goals in the period.

Good news... They only gave up 2 goals. That's a huge improvement over the last outing in the ROG.

However, they gave up a PP goal. So what? Nucks PK does that with regularity. Certainty even.

It was the ease with which the Isles scored their first and only PP goal.

That looked way too easy. Does anybody know what to do when Myers chases the guy in the corner? #Canucks

— DJTaxman77 (@taxman77.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 8:30 PM

Standing around watching the other team doesn't seem like the best defensive strategy. #Canucks

— Russ Benson 🍁 (@russellgburger.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 8:31 PM

And worse, we could feel the team sag. Even Footey mentioned it, so you know the sag was right there.

Which made the next Isles goal feel so terribly inevitable. As is the inertial pull of 4 Canucks going to one side of the ice, while the pass goes to the wide open shooter, who has much time and space to pick the spot he'll beat Lanky.

Agh! Is the second period a curse? In theory, you're not supposed to let the shooter have as much time as he wants to pick his spot.

-- Thursday

Better hustle by the #Canucks this game but we're still giving guys time to get their A shots off in our zone.

— Ryan avgtraveller (@viewfromtherog.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 8:35 PM

The great first period effort, the lead now sagging into the inevitable 11th straight loss.

Sure, the Canucks could comeback and win a tie, but it's still Monday. ROG rules are strict about coming back while sagging.

But still... only down 3-2 after 2. That's not so bad.

#Canucks won a period! Just not the latest one... but still... it's tie game, less a goal.

— NucksMisconduct (@nucksmisconduct.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 8:40 PM

Period 3

Following last game's Nucks successfull PK enigma in the 3rd, this PK enigma was more baffling.

Minute in and Nucks are on the kill. At least they're fresh. DOC is in the box. PK is going pretty good for the initial 20 seconds... then Mr. Chaos is frustrated and crosschecks an Isle. More of stick-shove, but a bit obvious and so Myers gets to share his cottage with DOC.

I didn't mind a push there by Chaos, but the cross-check was pretty obvious. #Canucks

— Ryan avgtraveller (@viewfromtherog.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:00 PM

And that's not even the scary part - the 3-against-5 PK. The scare was when MPetey had his stick break. Now it's a 2.5-against-5 PK for over a minute.

And the Isles fail to score. Really. Ronnie was playing like 2 defenders. Because he was the only D left with a working stick. And he used it.

Hronek with an almighty rim-around. #Canucks

— CrankyCanucksFan 🇨🇦🏒 (@crankycanucksfan.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:02 PM

Hronek with a MASSIVE clear. Dude is a superhero. #Canucks

— Ian St. (@ian-st.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:02 PM

Elias Pettersson, Filip Hronek and Marcus Pettersson with a fantastic penalty kill for the #Canucks. Even more impressive was the fact that Marcus had his stick break so it was essentially a 5 on 2

— Adam Kierszenblat (@adamkblat.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:03 PM

And with that determined, desperate effort, the Nucks didn't give a goal. Or two.

So... then you might ask why did they give up the 4th Isles goal? Wish you hadn't asked.

Watch the replay for the answer... perhaps it was the usual slack defensive coverage. Perhaps it was Myers watching the play and not his check. Or a few other details.

The worst part was who scored the GWG.

Ugh. The worst frikkin' person scores.

-- Thursday

Anyhow, while the minutes ticked down and we waited for the usual Footey, something fun and different happened.

Canucks score 6-on-5! Not making it up. Ronnie puts a shot on net and DOC tips it past the Shokrin. Wooo!

There's still time to pretend the Nucks tie it up, survive OT and get to Lanky time.

But there isn't. They don't. Canucks lose their 11th straight 4-3.

Fighting hard, even if they’re bad and end up losing… That’s all we can ask at this point. #Canucks

— CrankyCanucksFan 🇨🇦🏒 (@crankycanucksfan.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:34 PM

Here's a fun fact - depending on your version of fun.

The #Canucks 4 wins in their first 21 home games is the lowest total in franchise history.

— Adam Kierszenblat (@adamkblat.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:34 PM

OBSERVATIONS:

Nucks set a new loss streak record. And a new home non-winning record. All in the same game.

Players of Interest:

  • BROCK didn't score. And was one of the saggy ones in the 2nd. Weak on the puck, the boards and the desire.
  • Gnarland was another frustrated one... trying to do too much and not doing much at all, other than giving up the puck.
  • Kane played one of his best games - great timing!
  • EP40 didn't score when we really needed some Alien mojo.
  • Karlsson, Sassy and Hogz played well and didn't sag.

It was the vets who were the saggiest, not the kids.

But still, through most of the game... there were sorta right there.

That was a nearly perfect game for a team that's tanking. Keep it close right to the end, but still lose 😙👌 #Canucks

— 🇨🇦 Trent Leith 🏳️‍🌈 (@trentleith.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:36 PM

We're not as disappointed with this loss as the last one.

#Canucks’ passing was crisper, their overall play as a team was more connected. They didn’t seem to be surprising each other with each pass, like we’ve seen recently. Entertaining game.

— CrankyCanucksFan 🇨🇦🏒 (@crankycanucksfan.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:42 PM

This January, crisp passes are almost as good as crisp goals.

— NucksMisconduct (@nucksmisconduct.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:52 PM

Was at the game. Effort was good but they do pass up a lot of hits. Overall they look a step behind in terms of decisions and overall quickness. Line changes…. Not so good looked pretty disorganized at times

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Shortie and Dave to cover the almost win - sort of a win. Fine. A close loss,

GAME STATS

COMMENTING OUT LOUD

The naked presser from Kane.

Stickless MPetey talks about the PK.

Sassy goal and a presser.

Footsey getting honest - with the saggy vets. 1st time this season he calls out the vets?

Close game lost. That's not so bad.

The big tank rolls on. Back to the ROG on Wednesday vs the Caps.

Maybe Blueger will be back. Maybe Filip will be back. Maybe the Nucks will get a win.

There's no certainty in Nucks hockey, but lotsa losing. Enjoy the ride!
