GAME #23 RECAP - Nucks Drowned 5-2!

November 23, 2025
- jimmi

Great News! NHL's worst PK didn't give up a goal on 4 kills.

Bad news... NHL's 30th ranked team allowed 4 goals 5-on-5 and a single shortie.

Unlike the last loss in the ROG, Nucks didn't outplay the opponent. A tired, 2nd worst in the league team made the Canucks look like the old and tired team. Your Vancouver Canucks: 3rd worst NHL team.

Welcome to the bottom of the basement. Again.

Didn't start out that way.

In the 1st, Nucks score 1st. Ronnie breaks in on the big bad Wolf, holds up and blasts a shot to score - for the lead. 1-0 Nucks in the 1st minute of the game. That boded well.

And then... many bad things happened. In the new Footey free-for-all net front defense 'system', the Flames get early and often access for tips and bounces.

Some sloppy d-zone coverage mid-period and low-scoring Calgary takes advantage: 2-1 for the dirty rotten stinkin’ #Flames. With the exception of Quinn Hughes, the #Canucks are awful with breakouts, and get burned on scrambly play way too often.

Within a minute, a bad scrambly minute, Nucks are behind 2-1. And remain down 2-1 after 1.

Annnnd the canucks looking like a pond hockey team again and it's 2-1 for the biggest assholes in sports.

In the 2nd, Nucks get into penalty trouble. However... it's not as troubling as expected.

32nd PK > 32nd PP. We’re the best of the worst. #Canucks

While the Nucks recover from penalty trouble... they can't recover from their poor 5-on-5 play.

Net front coverage is problematic for the new Footey system. And the Flames exploited it. Again and again.

Man, our defensive coverage has just been so so poor all season. #Canucks

— fuzzysnack (@fuzzysnack.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 7:20 PM

Just after the 1st Flames goal of the period - yes there was more than 1, with Nucks down 3-1 - Kane gets all yappy and takes a penalty.

#Canucks give up a goal and Kane takes a penalty for being an angry idjit. Nice signing there, Alvin.

— NucksMisconduct (@nucksmisconduct.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 7:21 PM

One thing Kane has brought to the team is lots of fan engagement.

Allvin’s genius move was to sign Kane for 5+ million this off season. After everything the team lost and had been through last year. Like how do you even defend that shit? #Canucks

— fuzzysnack (@fuzzysnack.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 7:22 PM

Absolutely no need to have Evander Kane in the line up at this point. Penalty machine, legs are cooked, vibes are bad #Canucks

— Tythegoalie (@dempsty.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 7:22 PM

Ah, now THERE’S the Evander Kane that I expect, running his mouth to the refs over absolutely nothing and putting the opponent on the power play before the next puck drop after they scored on us. WHY did the #Canucks management think it was a good idea to bring this guy here?!?!?!?!

— ’Leigh (@technicalleigh.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 7:23 PM

Flames lead 4-1 after 2. Will the Nucks come back in the 3rd?

Spoiler Alert: Nope.

3rd worst team in the league getting trounced by the 2nd worst team #Canucks

— Ralph In The Ridge🇨🇦 (@ralphintheridge.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 7:34 PM

Almost every time the Flames come into the Nucks zone they look dangerous, generate chances and... score (4th tonight). The #Canucks? One and done... maybe a shot, maybe a puck battle but NO sustained pressure or chances. Being completely outplayed... pathetic.

Also...

This is a RESTED team. This is their 2nd game in 6 days. In that time they've had 2 practices and two days off. No excuse to look this lacklustre against a team playing their 4th game in 7 days and their 2nd in 2 days. Other than Willander/Hronek the team has sucked.

In the 3rd, Nucks ain't getting any 5-on-5 magic. But guess what... they can always score on the PP.

Mid-period Nucks get a PP and because of a weak pass from Brock that gets interrupted, give up a shortie.

Huggie is as po'd as we are. Maybe more. Quinn decides to be a one-man PP. Goes end-to-end, dekes all 4 Cowtown defenders, shoots on the big Wolf, gets his own rebound and scores! Flames weren't outmanned, they were out-Quinned.

Well that has to be rock bottom. This team has become disinterested. I assume practice did not go well. And then Quinn gets pissed off and scores. #Canucks

Quinn’s goal had F-this-I’m-just-going-to-do-it-myself written all over it. #Canucks

— Phanyxx (@phanyxx.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:19 PM

We might have hoped Huggie's heroic solo effort would motivate the rest of the team to get on their well-rested horses and score a few more.

But this is the Canucks, so watching some showoff - the best D in the game, the best D Nucks will ever see - isn't the motivator you might think.

Even worse, with nearly 4 minutes left, Footey pulls Lanky - because why not? He's not stopping pucks anyhow.

This raises questions as the futility unfolds...

Pulling the goalie… for what? Practice? 🤦🏼‍♂️ #Canucks

— CrankyCanucksFan 🇨🇦🏒 (@crankycanucksfan.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:23 PM

Kane, you have one job! You fumble the damn puck #Canucks

— Atinna Gunawan (@atinnag.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:26 PM

EN silver netting: Nucks didn't give up the EN. Whoopee!

Flames burn down the burnt-out Nucks 5-2 in the ROG. The ROG where the Nucks have won 3 games. Out of 10.

OBSERVATIONS:

Nucks PP scored! On 1 of 4 chances. Correction: Huggie scored and it was AMAZING to watch. Ronnie's goal was very pretty as well. All the goals from the backend. Yay!

No goals from Canucks front end. Boo!

Dismal performance in a winnable MUST WIN game. We're not upset about this season, Nucks Front Office. We understand. It's not easy to be paid millions to assemble a decent roster and coaching staff. Not easy at all.

I am done with the hallow talk from Jim Rutherford for #Canucks too No he's not responsible for the injuries, but he is responsible for the vacuous promises he keeps making. Aquilini Out Rutherford out

— Paul Le Comte 🇳🇿🇨🇦📷 (@paullecomtephoto.nz) November 23, 2025 at 8:26 PM

Allvin/Rutherford are the weakest link for the #Canucks right now. The team plays hard but for the 2nd straight year they’re a poorly constructed group with obvious gaps. Last year on D and this year on offense. I really thought this regime was a turning point for us but it’s more of the same.

— fuzzysnack (@fuzzysnack.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:27 PM

No worries about keeping the low status quo.

I want somebody to get fired. I don't even care if it helps. I just want to see someone get the axe. #Canucks

— Steve Burgess (@steveburgess53.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:31 PM

Tick-tock Allvin…better stop twiddling around on the fringe. You either fix this team NOW or you tear it down. The no plan - plan has already been tested here and it doesn’t work. #Canucks

— fuzzysnack (@fuzzysnack.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 9:04 PM

It's coming up almost 4 years that the #canucks have been Jim Rutherford's team. The full situation the team is in, is completely on him.

— Gary Moen 🇨🇦 (@gmoen.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 9:19 PM

Just need better starts at home...

We really should just start the game with the goalie pulled. #Canucks

— DJTaxman77 (@hugheshart43.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:33 PM

Nucks are now 3 games under 500 and holding down the 30th spot in the league ranking. Is this the team Quinn wants to keep playing for?

I hate to be that guy, but imagine what Quinn Hughes could do on a good team witha roster full of players who can finish and check and pass and skate at the NHL level. He’s elite individually, but these #Canucks are just plain bad at hockey.

— Pucked in the Head (@puckedinthehead.bsky.social) November 23, 2025 at 8:34 PM

A real Organization would build around a player like Quinn Hughes- the only move over the Summer was picking up Kane - nothing will change with this ownership, it is very sad #Canucks

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Shortie and Dave have to comment nicely about things they'd rather shout about!

GAME STATS

COMMENTING OUT LOUD

Capt'n Huggie takes the heat - and gives it back.

Subdued Lanky isn't cranky, but hoping Demmers will be on the road trip.

Pretty good talk, Tyler.

Footey recalling the old Willy presser excuse playbook.

Terrible game. Horrible Loss at home. Is it all bad news? Or is there a bigger strategy flowing under False Creek?

Is it time to consider what Franny has and may never consider?

Let's find out!

Time, finally, for a Canucks rebuild?
