A familiar pest sinks the Leafs in OT, the Jets respond in a big way to even things up with the Stars, Team Canada opens the Worlds with a win over Slovenia, and the Abbotsford Canucks are onto Round Three of the Calder Cup Playoffs!
LAST NIGHT'S ACTION
FLORIDA PANTHERS 5 TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS 4 (OT) (Leafs lead series 2-1)
Brad Marchand plunked one behind Joseph Woll at 15:27 of OT for a 5-4 win last night in Sunrise, FL to move their series to 2-1 for the Leafs. The Panthers had been trailing the Leafs 3-1 early in the second, but goals from Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe and former Canuck Jonah Gadjovich gave them a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes. Morgan Reilly would tie it midway through the third though to send it to OT. The Panthers will look to tie the series on Sunday evening in Game Four.
WINNIPEG JETS 4 DALLAS STARS 0 (Series tied 1-1)
After dropping Game One of the series to Dallas, the Jets needed two things to happen: They needed Connor Hellebuyck to show some of that mid-season form, and they needed to shut down Mikko Rantanen. They did both in a big way, as they got a 21 save shutout from the reigning Vezina Trophy winner and a two goal night from Nikolaj Ehlers en route to a 4-0 win, to tie their series at one game a piece. Ehlers hadn't scored an NHL playoff goal since 2021, and getting him going could be absolutely massive for their playoff hopes. This series now shifts to Dallas, and can they recreate the kind of dominance they've shown at home after three disappointing road outings in the first round against St Louis?
CANADA (1-0-0-0) 4 SLOVENIA (0-0-0-1) 0
Team Canada kicked off their round robin portion of the World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden with a 4-0 victory over Slovenia. Canada was led by a 2 goal performance from Bo Horvat, who notched both tallies on the power play. That first unit with Horvat, Nathan MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby was solid, going 3-7 on the night. MacKinnon set up both Horvat goals and added one of his own, and Noah Dobson had the other goal for Canada on a beautiful setup from Macklin Celebrini. Lukas Horak kept things from being embarrassing for the Slovenians, as he stopped 40 of 44 Canadian shots, while Dylan Garand stopped all 11 shots he faced. That will likely be Garand's only start of the tournament. Expect Marc-Andre Fleury to get at least one before turning the reins over to Jordan Binnington, who arrived in Stockholm yesterday to join the team. Next up is a match against Latvia tomorrow morning, that game will be on TSN at 7:20 am PST.
ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS 2 COACHELLA VALLEY FIREBIRDS 0 (Canucks win series 3-1)
Arturs Silovs stopped all 29 Firebirds shots he faced, and a PPG from Max Sasson in the first period would hold up as the winner as the Abbotsford Canucks took down the two time defending Western Conference Champions and advanced to the third round of the Calder Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Canucks will take on the number one seeded Colorado Eagles in a best of five series for the Pacific Division title starting Friday, May 16. The first two games of the series will be in Abbotsford before shifting to Colorado for the remainder of the series.

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS (0-2) vs EDMONTON OILERS (2-0)
T-MOBILE ARENA, LAS VEGAS, NV
6:00 PM PST/ 9:00 PM EST
TV: SPORTSNET, CBC
I'm not one to go to bat for the Vegas Golden Knights, but they absolutely got jobbed in that Game Two overtime when the refs refused to call Viktor Arvidsson for taking Brayden McNabb into the boards from behind shortly before the Oilers would get the winner from Leon Draisaitl. McNabb will likely be out of the lineup today, but they could get Pavel Dorofeyev back from injury for Game Three. They also won't lose Nicholas Roy to suspension, as he was just given a fine after a meeting with DoPS, who have really just devolved into a making shit up as they go branch of punishment for NHL misdeeds.
Anyway, the Oilers made an announcement earlier today, but it apparently won't affect the game at all.
Oh, goddamn lol. This should be fun. Either the Oilers lose by 6, or Vegas gets the shame of losing to this guy. Place your bets!

GAME DAY BATTLE HYMN
Found myself in a TOXIC HOLOCAUST kinda mood today, so let's go back to 2008's "An Overdose Of Death..." album for a little "Feedback, Blood And Distortion"!
