2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Round Two Open Thread- May 9/25

May 9, 2025
- Westy

The torture of the playoffs continue tonight. I say torture due to the fact the Canucks are not there. Patrik Allvin was answering questions about Miller/Petey fiasco...and it gives Kent chest pain as he thinks about the incompetence of management.

LAST NIGHT'S ACTION

EDMONTON BEATS LAS VEGAS 5-4 IN O/T (Edmonton leads 2-0)

The Golden Knights have made too many mistakes against an Oilers team that has the speed to make you pay quickly. The Vegas defense has looked suspect on a bunch of plays and 5 minute misconducts don't help. I won't count out Vegas, but the Oilers have found a way to win in both games so far. It's either going 7 games or it will be a sweep. With the next two games in Edmonton....I think it might be the latter.

WASHINGTON BEATS CAROLINA 3-1 (Series tied 1-1)

The Caps capitalized (get it) on mistakes and powerplays to get a win in a back and forth game without many shots. The Canes are going to have to find ways to break out faster and get more bodies in front of Thompson.

TONIGHT'S ACTION

MAPLE LEAFS (1A) at PANTHERS (3A)

Eastern Conference Second Round, Game 3

7 p.m. ET

Toronto leads best-of-7 series 2-0

The Panthers must be happy to get out of Canada. The defending cup champs have not been able to body their way through the series and have been outplayed. The Leafs seem to have found some sort of groove and maybe the sand and sun won't stop them this year. We'll see.

Maple Leafs projected lineup

Matthew Knies -- Auston Matthews -- Mitch Marner

Max Pacioretty -- John Tavares -- William Nylander

Bobby McMann -- Max Domi -- Pontus Holmberg

Steven Lorentz -- Scott Laughton -- Calle Jarnkrok

Morgan Rielly -- Brandon Carlo

Jake McCabe -- Chris Tanev

Simon Benoit -- Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Joseph Woll

Matt Murray

Scratched: David Kampf, Dakota Mermis, Philippe Myers, Ryan Reaves, Nicholas Robertson, Artur Akhtyamov, Dennis Hildeby

Injured: Jani Hakanpaa (lower body), Anthony Stolarz (undisclosed)

Panthers projected lineup

Carter Verhaeghe -- Aleksander Barkov -- Sam Reinhart

Evan Rodrigues -- Sam Bennett -- Matthew Tkachuk

Eetu Luostarinen -- Anton Lundell -- Brad Marchand

Niko Mikkola -- Seth Jones

Nate Schmidt -- Dmitry Kulikov

Sergei Bobrovsky

Vitek Vanecek

Scratched: Uvis Balinskis, A.J. Greer, Jonah Gadjovich, Jaycob Megna, Tomas Nosek

Injured: None

Status report

Stolarz, a goalie, did not travel with the Maple Leafs and won't play. … The Panthers may have a few changes due to health issues. Coach Paul Maurice said those would be game-time decisions.

STARS (2C) at JETS (1C)

Western Conference Second Round, Game 2

9:30 p.m. ET

Dallas leads best-of-7 series 1-0

This game was close all the way and then in the 2nd period in the span of 2 minutes, it wasn't. And then the Jets got to within one, but just couldn't get one passed Oettinger. Winnipeg desperately needs to get the split before the teams head to Dallas.

Stars projected lineup

Mikael Granlund -- Roope Hintz -- Mikko Rantanen

Jamie Benn -- Matt Duchene -- Tyler Seguin

Mason Marchment-- Wyatt Johnston -- Jason Robertson

Oskar Back -- Sam Steel -- Evgenii Dadonov

Thomas Harley -- Ilya Lyubushkin

Esa Lindell -- Cody Ceci

Lian Bichsel -- Alexander Petrovic

Jake Oettinger

Casey DeSmith

Scratched: Mavrik Bourque, Colin Blackwell, Mathew Dumba, Brendan Smith

Injured: Miro Heiskanen (knee), Nils Lundkvist (shoulder)

Jets projected lineup

Kyle Connor -- Mark Scheifele -- Gabriel Vilardi

Nikolaj Ehlers -- Vladislav Namestnikov -- Cole Perfetti

Nino Niederreiter -- Adam Lowry -- Mason Appleton

Brandon Tanev -- Morgan Barron -- Alex Iafallo

Josh Morrissey -- Dylan DeMelo

Dylan Samberg -- Neal Pionk

Haydn Fleury -- Colin Miller

Connor Hellebuyck

Eric Comrie

Scratched: Dominic Toninato, David Gustafsson, Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Luke Schenn, Ville Heinola

Injured: Rasmus Kupari (concussion), Logan Stanley (undisclosed)

Status report

The Stars, who held an optional morning skate, will dress the same lineup they used in a 3-2 win in Game 1 on Wednesday. ... Schenn, a defenseman, will be a scratch for the first time this postseason.

Game Day Battle Hymn

I am hoping Winnipeg finds a way to split the series tonight....they need to get the Led out.

Comment System How-To

New NM, new comment system. Still uses words and stuff. Hover over the icons to see what they do.

The most vital function is image embedding. Paste the link to the image in the comment box. When the comment is posted, the image appears. Most of  the time.

NOTE: Remove the non-image name jibberish. If the image link has any stuff after the file extension - usually a ? with directives like: woo.gif?size=480 blah blah - delete up to and including the ? - simples.

GIF it up for Westy! Or still life in rum.
NOTE: Comments refresh every 30 seconds. Not fast enough for most of our lightening round contestants. We are working to increase the refresh speed. Just... not working too hard... because NM labour guidelines. Thanks for being patient!
