One night after the Leafs surprised everyone by not screwing up, the Jets try to force a Game Seven, but some pregame news makes those odds even more daunting.
LAST NIGHT'S ACTION
TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS 2 FLORIDA PANTHERS 0 (Series tied 3-3)
If you were given a list of probable outcomes for last night's Game Six between the Leafs and Panthers, a Leafs shutout to force a Game Seven probably wouldn't be the popular choice. And Auston Matthews being the hero? Even more unlikely, but here we are. So, putting aside the absolute lunacy of Ron MacLean's attempts at trying to make a big win into something far more than it could ever be seen as, this is a massive moment for the Leafs. Win, and they move on for a chance at their first Cup berth since 1967. Lose, and they're gonna blow the whole thing up. It's as captivating a story line as you can get for a second round playoff series, for sure.
ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS 2 COLORADO EAGLES 0 (Canucks lead series 1-0)
Ty Mueller's PPG in the second period would hold up as the winner, as the Canucks continued their march towards a shot at the Calder Cup with a 2-0 win over Colorado in Game One of the Pacific Division Finals series last night in Abbotsford.
Arturs Silovs was once again the story for the Canucks as he earned a shutout for the second straight contest. Silovs has allowed just 13 goals in 8 playoff games, with 3 shutouts so far. D Victor Mancini scored a crucial empty netter in the third to seal the deal as they held off the AHL's top scoring team and a ferocious third period push from the Eagles. Game Two goes tomorrow night at 6pm at the Abbotsford Centre before shifting to Colorado for the remainder of the series.
TONIGHT'S ACTION
WINNIPEG JETS (2-3) vs DALLAS STARS (3-2)
AMERICAN AIRLINES ARENA, DALLAS, TX
5:00 PM PST/ 8:00 PM EST
TV: SPORTSNET, CBC
The Winnipeg Jets were impressive as hell facing elimination on Thursday night, rattling off a 4-0 win to send this series back to Dallas for a Game Six and hopefully, a Game Seven Monday night back in Winnipeg. Despite being the NHL's best team this season, the odds are against the Jets tonight, and those odds got a little steeper.
There's not a rational person out there who would blame Scheifele for heading home to be with his family in what has to be an overwhelming moment of grief. After discussions with his family and the team, he's going to stay, and whether or not this ends up with a Game Seven on Monday, the strength it takes to do this in light of the situation is admirable.
