The Edmonton Oilers used their power play in OT to complete a comeback over Florida in Game One, so expect a parade tonight as Florida will have spent the last two days lobbying for calls tonight. And down in Texas, the Abbotsford Canucks can make history and punch their ticket to the Calder Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history with a win over the Stars.
EDMONTON OILERS (1-0) vs FLORIDA PANTHERS (0-1)
ROGERS PLACE, EDMONTON, AB
5:00 PM PST/ 8:00 PM EST
TV: SPORTSNET, CBC
Yeah, I know. If I could just put my non-partisan hockey analyst hat on for a moment, that was a heck of a start to the finals. It had just about everything a hockey fan could ask for, really. Now, is that a shitty way to lose a hockey game? Of course it is. No one likes that penalty, especially because it always seems to end up in the back of your net at the most crucial times. However, you have to give full credit to the Oilers for the comeback there. They're rare in the Stanley Cup Finals and that was impressive. Sure, they continue to get ridiculous bounces, but it's been said you create your own luck, so there's that.
And that brings us to Game Two. If you think the penalties are going to be even or close to it tonight, welcome to watching hockey for the first time ever, I guess? The lobbying through the media has been quiet so far, but you know behind the scenes, Florida's management are all over the Supervisor of Officials, trying to limit the damage that the Oilers PP can do. And some of you will say that this happens all the time, and all the teams do it, and to an extent you're right. The problem is the lack of consistency from what gets called during the season to the playoffs alters the game, and not always positively.
So expect the Panthers to come out flying in the hopes of catching the Oilers off guard to try and draw early power plays. As good as they are, they definitely don't want to head back to Florida down two games to none to the best player in the world.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS (3-1) vs TEXAS STARS (1-3)
H-E-B CENTER, CEDAR PARK, TX
5:00 PDT/ 8:00 EDT
RADIO: SPORTSNET 650 TV: FLOHOCKEY.TV
The Abbotsford Canucks are one step away from a date with the Charlotte Checkers to battle for the AHL's Calder Cup trophy as they take on the Texas Stars tonight. The Canucks took a 3-1 series lead on Wednesday night with a wild 5-4 win in double overtime. Danila Klimovich with an absolutely stunning backhander with time winding down in the second overtime period. Klimovich had yet to play a game in the series, but boy did he ever have an impact in this one. The teams traded leads, through two periods, and the Canucks looked to get an empty netter to seal a victory, but a failed zone clear led to a Texas goal with just 19 seconds left in the third from Justin Hryckowian. Tristen Nielsen scored twice for Abbotsford, and they got a goal and an assist from Linus Karlsson, and Victor Mancini.
GAME DAY BATTLE HYMN
Last night, I was informed of the passing of a guy who was a massive part of the BC metal scene, and someone I was proud to call a friend, Steve Migliarese. Best known as bassist for Victoria's MEATLOCKER SEVEN, Steve was also the driving force behind ROTTERDAM, RUN LIKE HELL, THE SWISS and ACORN HELL.
ML7 was the 'house band' for my radio show at TRU's CFBX radio in Kamloops in the early 2000's, and I was fortunate enough to get to see them play live a few times, including the Ragefest Festival we promoted in Kamloops in 2003.
I wasn't just a fan of his music, Steve was a genuine sweetheart of a guy, always enjoyed chatting about metal and hockey with him. His passing comes just a couple days after his 49th birthday, and was utterly unexpected. To say that the Victoria music scene has been shaken by this is an understatement. Trying to pick just one song to play was so hard, because Steve's versatility as a musician was so diverse, one song couldn't do him justice, so I am gonna lay down a few to let you see just a small sample of his musical legacy.
To his partner Gabrielle, his family, friends and band mates, I am hurting with you as we try and comprehend the sudden loss of someone who always seemed so full of life. Farewell, my friend. You are already missed like you wouldn't believe.
