After a pretty depressing season for Canucks fans overall, the success of their AHL affiliate is definitely a welcome surprise. This team has been gutting out wins against some pretty tough opposition along the way, and are now three wins away from a berth in the Calder Cup Finals.
They went back and forth with Texas in Game One, both teams holding a lead for a while before Christian Wolanin ended it at 5:51 of OT for the 1-0 series lead.
They were able to minimize the damage from Texas' top line, holding Justin Hryckowian pointless, and limiting Kole Lind and Cameron Hughes to one point each.
The big story offensively for Abbotsford continues to be Linus Karlsson. He had two assists in Game One to take over the team lead in scoring. Karlsson now has 7 goals and 5 assists. He's one point ahead of Sammy Blais, who has 3 goals and 8 assists. He's tied for the team assist lead with Arshdeep Bains, who has yet to score a goal in the playoffs.
Arturs Silovs has been one of the best stories in the AHL Playoffs so far, with 4 shutouts in 13 games, and some impressive numbers to go with that. He leads all goalies in save % with a .937 and second in GAA with 1.74. He was fantastic again in Game One, stopping 36 of 28 Texas shots including 4 in OT.
It's vital the Canucks win tonight, and put all the pressure on Texas as the series shifts there for Games Three through Five (if necessary). To be able to come out of there with a series win, or at the very least a 3-2 lead for Game Six would be ideal.
